Consciously dealing with sun and heat
Especially in summer, heat can have a severe impact on health. Young children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses are particularly at risk. High temperatures can exacerbate existing conditions such as cardiovascular, respiratory, kidney or mental illnesses. Heatstroke and exhaustion also occur more frequently. However, not only people with pre-existing conditions are affected, but healthy people can also suffer from extreme heat.
As part of its health promotion efforts, the Ministry of Society and Justice has created the website www.hitze.li together with the Office of Public Health. It provides a wealth of useful information on the subject of heat and health.
Three golden rules for hot days
- Avoid physical exertion: Take it easy during the hottest part of the day and stay in the shade if possible. Cover your skin with light clothing and protect yourself with sun cream.
- Keep the heat away - cool your body: Ventilate at night and early in the morning and close the windows during the day. Cool your body, e.g. in the Mühleholz outdoor pool or by taking a cool shower, placing cold cloths on your forehead and neck and taking cold foot and hand baths.
- Drink a lot - eat lightly: Drink regularly (at least 1.5 liters per day), and avoid sweetened and alcoholic drinks if possible. Eat fruit and vegetables rich in water and avoid fatty and hard-to-digest foods
Protect yourself and others when it's hot outside, because: "Heat affects us all!"
