Water supply Vaduz - Schaan
Inter-municipal cooperation plays a central role in the supply of drinking water. The municipalities of Vaduz and Schaan worked closely together to implement the new Mühleholz step pumping station. The costs for the construction are also shared.
The new Mühleholz step pumping station is part of the expansion concept for the Schaan and Vaduz water supply systems. It is used to exchange water on both sides, particularly in emergency situations, and to exchange excess capacity from Vaduz. The new system replaces the existing, outdated step pumping station, which was housed in the high school and no longer met today's requirements. The old pumping station has since been decommissioned and dismantled. The new step pumping station has the function of significantly increasing the feed quantities when required.
Water exchange
The step pumping station is designed in such a way that the water requirements in Vaduz can be met in an emergency by feeding in water from the Schaan water supply via the new system. As water demand is expected to increase in both Schaan and Vaduz, any shortages can be supplied via the Wiesen 1 and the planned Wiesen 2 groundwater pumping stations. At the same time, the step pumping station covers the water requirements of the Schaan water supply.
Water demand
Current forecasts show that the demand for water will rise sharply over the next few years. In order to ensure the necessary water exchange when required, the pumps are adjustable and designed for a flow rate of up to 120 liters per second. Two pumps were installed, which can be used to supply Vaduz and Schaan at any time.
Control and costs
For optimum monitoring and control of the system, all measurement and operating data is transmitted to the process control systems in the Vaduz and Schaan waterworks.
The total costs of around CHF 1.5 million will be split 50/50 between the municipalities of Vaduz and Schaan.
Mayor Florian Meier: "The new Mühleholz step pumping station guarantees a reliable and future-oriented water supply in Vaduz and Schaan. The cross-municipal cooperation has worked extremely well."
Head Daniel Hilti: "Liechtenstein is in the fortunate position of having sufficient drinking water of the best quality. The cross-municipal cooperation on the new step pumping station guarantees that this most important of all staple foods is available to all residents at all times. We are very pleased with the result."
