City Council Approves Next Step in the Redesign of City Hall Plaza
The City Council has approved funding for a feasibility study, including a cost estimate, for the redesign of City Hall Square and its surroundings. This marks another key step in the long-term development of the city center.
The Heart of the Municipality of Vaduz
Town Hall Square forms the heart of the municipality of Vaduz and serves as an important meeting place and venue for events. At the same time, it functions as the central entrance to the old town for residents and visitors alike. Its design significantly shapes the townscape and the character of the downtown area and must meet a wide range of requirements related to daily life, culture, community activities, and events.
Part of a comprehensive downtown development
The redesign of Rathausplatz is part of the strategic downtown development of the municipality of Vaduz. This is based on the 2018 Downtown Strategy, which was developed through a broadly supported participatory process involving the public. The goal is to further strengthen the downtown as a vibrant, attractive, and easily accessible place.
The focus is on high-quality public spaces, safe pedestrian and bicycle paths, and good public transportation connections. Following the market square with its mobility hub as the first implementation step, the next central area—Town Hall Square—is now being further developed.
A Permanent, High-Quality Solution for Rathausplatz
As early as June 2024, the municipal council had decided to move away from temporary tent solutions and infrastructure for Rathausplatz in the future. Instead, a permanent, functional, and high-quality solution featuring a multifunctional canopy is to be implemented. The plan is to preserve the open character of the square while enabling flexible use.
With the acquisition of the properties at Städtle 18, 20, and 22 in 2025, the municipality has expanded its scope for action in the area surrounding the Town Hall Square.
Over the past few months, a working group has developed the basic framework, formulated requirements for the future town hall square, and analyzed its interaction with the market square. The results were subsequently broadly supported through a public participation process involving residents as well as representatives from business, culture, and community organizations.
Feasibility study as a basis
Based on these results, the next step will be to conduct a feasibility study with a cost estimate for the redesign of the town hall square and its surroundings. As part of the feasibility study, the diverse requirements will be examined, and evidence will be provided that a functional and structural solution is feasible. The feasibility study will form the basis for further planning steps as well as for applying for a commitment credit.
The study covers not only the redesign of Rathausplatz itself but also its surroundings. In addition to the core area of Town Hall Square, adjacent areas—in particular the area from the current coach terminal to the Art Museum, the access routes, and the recently acquired properties at Städtle 18, 20, and 22—are to be included in the study. This will enable the development of an urban planning and functionally consistent solution for this central and sensitive location.
Next Steps
The feasibility study is expected to be completed by spring 2027. Based on this, the municipal council will decide on a commitment credit, which is also expected to be submitted to voters for approval.
An architectural competition is planned to follow. Implementation is scheduled to begin in 2030.
The implementation of the downtown development will be carried out in phases: Following the development of the market square with a mobility hub and underground parking garage, planning for the town hall square and its surroundings will now begin.
The commitment credit for the preparation of a feasibility study with cost estimates for the redesign of Rathausplatz and its surroundings amounts to CHF 500,000.00 (including VAT).
With this decision, the municipality of Vaduz is continuing the consistent development of its city center and laying the foundation for a sustainable and forward-looking redesign of Rathausplatz and its surroundings.
