Order to extend Rheindamm road
In April 2021, the Vaduz municipal council decided to extend the Rhine embankment from Lochgass to Lettstrasse for motorized private transport and to relocate the main cycle route to the inland canal. The electorate confirmed this decision in a referendum on October 3, 2021. In March 2025, the municipality of Vaduz received an order from the Office for the Environment (AU) rejecting this construction project.
After a planning study was carried out for the Lochgass Rheindamm/Lettstrasse expansion construction project, the municipal council commissioned the civil engineering department to initiate the impact procedure in accordance with the Nature Conservation Act and to draw up a corresponding construction project. In May 2024, the municipality applied to the Office for the Environment to carry out the impact procedure for the planned "Lochgass - Binnenkanal bis Binnendamm und Lettstrasse" construction project. This was followed by various discussions and letters between the Office for the Environment and the municipality of Vaduz in this matter.
In March 2025, the municipality of Vaduz finally received a ruling from the Office for the Environment. In this decision, the Office rejected the planned road construction on the grounds that there was no overriding public interest in the road expansion in the Lochgass and Rheindamm area. The municipality of Vaduz lodged an appeal against this decision. The case is now before the Appeals Commission for Administrative Matters.
