Renovation of utility lines on Pappelweg
The municipality of Vaduz will begin renovating the utility lines on Pappelweg in May 2026. The project will be carried out prior to the construction of the new market square, which will include a mobility hub and an underground parking garage, in order to ensure that construction logistics for the new market square can proceed smoothly. During the construction period, there will be detours along the route to school, and the Äule playground will be closed.
Implementation temporarily postponed
The Municipality of Vaduz had already planned a comprehensive redesign of Pappelweg for 2023/2024, including the renewal of all utility lines along the Giessen. The municipal council approved the project in March 2023 and allocated a budget of CHF 3.72 million for it. Due to the prioritization of other construction projects, implementation was subsequently temporarily postponed.
Coordination of projects in the city center
Following the public’s approval of the new market square project—which includes a mobility hub and underground parking garage—at the end of March 2026, the Municipality of Vaduz has realigned all planned projects in the surrounding area. A coordinated schedule was developed in collaboration with the involved project owners. The goal is to complete the surrounding projects by the time the new market square is finished in 2030 and to design the area along the Giessen in a continuous and uniform manner.
To achieve this goal, the utility lines on Pappelweg must first be renovated. This will be carried out in two phases starting in May 2026. First, work will begin on the southern section between the Marktplatz parking garage and Äulestrasse 38 (Haus der Finanzen). This will be followed, starting in summer 2026, by the northern section up to Lettstrasse.
Once the utility line work is complete, Pappelweg is scheduled to reopen provisionally to pedestrians and cyclists starting in mid-2027. For this purpose, a temporary surface will be installed, and temporary pedestrian bridges over the Giessen will be constructed in the area of Toniäulestrasse and near the Äule Elementary School.
Adjustments to school routes necessary
The school route was coordinated in advance with the relevant authorities. During the construction period on Pappelweg, the previous route along the Giessen will be suspended. Students will now be directed via Weiherweg to Lettstrasse and on via Alvierweg and Dr. Grass-Strasse to the Äule Primary School.
The walking bus will also be adjusted accordingly. To further ensure safety on the school routes, a traffic patrol will be deployed during school hours at the Am Schrägen Weg crossing throughout the construction period. Students and parents will receive specific information from the school administration in consultation with the teachers.
Coordinated Construction Site Logistics from 2026 to 2030
A key prerequisite for the smooth operation of the “Pappelweg” and “Neubau Marktplatz” construction sites is effective construction site logistics. To ensure traffic access to and from the underground garages of the Landes and Landesbank, it is planned to route construction traffic for the new Marktplatz parking garage via a one-way system—with entry from Äulestrasse through Äulepark and exit onto Kirchstrasse. For this purpose, a temporary auxiliary bridge will be constructed to serve as a construction site access route over the Giessen until 2030.
Activities for Children and Families
As a supporting measure, the municipality is ensuring that activities for children and families will continue despite the restrictions. Starting May 14, 2026, the “Summerträff” on the forecourt of the old post office building will create a temporary gathering place in the center. Additionally, alternative play and activity areas such as the Auring playground with a pump track or the Waldhotel family park will be available.
Costs
To coordinate the implementation of all construction sites directly or indirectly related to the renovation of utility lines on Pappelweg, the municipal council has approved a supplementary budget of CHF 1.05 million for the accelerated measures and to ensure synergies.
